Combat in BLUE REFLECTION Quartet splits into two families. BLUE REFLECTION: Second Light and the rebuilt BLUE REFLECTION: SUN share Gust’s real-time Timeline system: Ether Points accumulate continuously, icons move toward an Action Line, and Gear levels gate how much energy you can store before acting. Remastered BLUE REFLECTION (2017) instead uses turn-based Reflector turns with Ether Charge, Overdrive chains, and real-time Guard or Recovery button inputs during enemy actions. This guide focuses on the Second Light/SUN model Quartet players will spend most hours inside, then notes original differences so you do not import the wrong habits.

Real-time Timeline and Ether Points

Battles progress in real time rather than strict turn order. Ally icons drift right as your party stores Ether Points (shown as ep on the UI), while enemy icons drift left as they prepare attacks. When an icon crosses the Action Line, press the displayed button to execute a queued skill. Each skill lists an Ether cost; as long as stored Ether meets that threshold, you can chain multiple skills in one window.

Ether Recovery Speed rises each time a character uses a skill. Higher recovery speed means icons reach the Action Line faster, which is why aggressive skill use beats passive waiting. If you hit your current Ether limit, ally icons stop advancing until you spend Ether—watch for that stall and release skills before the Timeline freezes your momentum.

The number in the top-left of a character’s Timeline slot is their current Gear (1 through 5). Each Gear tier raises the Ether cap, letting you afford heavier skill chains. Gear shifts occur when Ether Recovery Speed crosses thresholds during a fight. By default, characters can reach Gear 3 through natural battle flow; raising Talent Levels unlocks access to Gear 4 and 5, which matters for endgame Fragment activation and burst windows.

Combos and Ether Tide

Your combo counter increments with each allied hit. Enemy heavy attacks can break combos prematurely, so interrupting their Timeline with knockback or Knockdown is defensive as well as offensive. When the combo reaches 15, you can activate Ether Tide—a character-unique finisher unlocked through story progression. Ether Tide hits hard enough to justify setup, but it resets your combo to zero, so plan around that drop if you rely on sustained pressure.

Stacked skills (using multiple queued attacks before the Action Line) and Support orders from bench allies can keep combos climbing without exposing your front line. Consult builds for characters whose skill kits naturally maintain fifteen-hit routes.

Attributes, knockback, and Knockdown

Many attack skills carry an attribute: Slash, Pierce, Shock, Tremor, or Warp. Striking a weakness deals bonus damage and pushes the enemy slightly backward on the Timeline—a knockback effect distinct from Knockdown. Not every skill has an attribute; neutral hits still advance combos but won’t manipulate enemy pacing.

Knockdown triggers when you land repeated hits on the same target. A knocked-down enemy loses stored Ether, suffers reduced Ether Recovery Speed, and resets to the start of their Timeline lane. Knockdown windows are prime healing or Gear-shift opportunities. Some enemies erect barriers while knocked down; breaking every barrier can initiate a One-on-One duel where winning with a ten-hit combo or depleting HP triggers a powerful return finisher that preserves your main-battle combo count.

Status ailments—Paralysis, Poison, Blind, Slow, Curse, Bleed—and ally Support Effects further tilt Timeline control. Slow in particular mirrors the Gear system by throttling enemy Ether Recovery Speed.

Back attacks and Heartscape openings

Outside battle, swinging your weapon in a Heartscape (or SUN’s equivalent field) can start combat with advantage. Touching an enemy begins a standard engagement, but hitting an unaware enemy while in Search Mode triggers a Back Attack: your center-slot character enters with bonus Ether and the foe is easier to Knockdown. Always approach from Search Mode when the UI allows it; the swing input differs by platform—see controls.

The same philosophy existed in original BLUE REFLECTION’s Common, where preemptive strikes in the Other World granted opening Ether. Quartet preserves that skill expression in rebuild titles.

Reflector forms and Gear relationship

As Gear climbs during a fight, characters visually shift into Reflector forms—magical girl combat bodies with expanded skill access. Reflector state is not a separate mode you toggle manually; it emerges from Ether Recovery Speed thresholds within the Timeline battle. Higher Gear unlocks stronger Fragment passives (see fragments and bonds) and heavier skill tiers.

Community min-max notes for Second Light often mention a practical Ether Recovery Speed target near 250 ep/s at battle start: values above that may waste points until Gear catches up, while values below leave you one skill short of high-Gear bursts. Treat that as tuning guidance, not a hard cap—story fights rarely demand perfect optimization.

Supporters, items, and One-on-One

Supporters are bench characters who activate Support Orders after Order Ring cycles meet skill conditions. They can also consume items or swap into active slots if a Reflector falls. Managing Supporter formation in the party menu is as important as front-line Gear planning.

Crafted items—healing, buffs, enemy disruptors—are usable mid-fight and strongly recommended in lengthy boss phases. The items guide covers school Craft loops that feed your inventory.

Original BLUE REFLECTION combat (2017)

The remastered first game plays differently enough that Second Light habits can hurt you. Reflectors take explicit turns, build Ether through Ether Charge, then spend it on Active Commands such as Guard, Recovery, or Overdrive multi-skill chains. Guard and Recovery during enemy turns use real-time button holds—the longer you input, the more Ether you spend and the stronger the effect. Under pressure, Guard can upgrade to Reflect, returning massive damage.

Fragments in the original title socket into individual skills rather than occupying a gear grid. Bond Episodes and Date Events grant Fragments and growth points; combat levels come from relationships, not grind alone. Supporters appear as scripted allies who perform character-specific techniques when called. Read fragments and bonds before planning a min-max first playthrough—you cannot collect every Fragment in one run because bond choices branch.
